“I applaud Brian Doherty as a “Hero of Reform” for signing the three New York Uprising pledges. This year voters are counting on candidates to commit to specific reforms in advance, as Brian has done. I look forward to working with him to see them swiftly implemented should he be elected.” —Former NYC Mayor Ed Koch, Founder, NY Uprising
My name is Brian Doherty and I am the Republican/Conservative candidate for the New York State Assembly for your district. I am a lifelong resident of Brooklyn and a married father of three young daughters. I was also a NYC Police Sergeant until retiring last year after proudly serving this city and it’s citizens for twenty-three years.
My decision to seek this office did not come lightly. After serving as a police officer since the age of twenty, I was eagerly looking forward to a break from public service but I could not help but be interested in the embarrassing daily headlines from Albany. I was outraged, as I’m sure you were by the seemingly endless stories of theft, mismanagement and corruption on the part of our elected officials. With newfound free time on my hands, I began to become involved with local political groups. I learned that our local Assemblyman, a twenty eight-year Albany veteran had occupied the ballot of both major parties since 1998. The voters of our district have not even been offered a serious alternative in nearly twelve years!
I was frustrated with the endless corruption, the embarrassing conduct of our legislators, the fear of what my children would inherit AND I WAS LEFT WITH NO CHOICE BUT TO SEND THE SAME PERSON TO ALBANY TO REPRESENT ME!!! I decided that I had to do something! I contacted the local Republican Party and accepted their nomination for election to the State Assembly.
My opponent is Dov Hikind. Like myself, he is a conservative, family man who is strong on law and order. He has served fourteen terms and has accomplished much for the community of Borough Park. Unfortunately, his district also consists of Dyker Heights and a section of Bay Ridge where he has been virtually invisible, leaving these communities wildly underrepresented. His presence during Assembly sessions has become spotty in recent years resulting in one of the Legislature’s poorest attendance records and the amount of time he spends abroad is becoming legendary.
Mr. Hikind has clearly lost the enthusiasm he once had for his position and his impressive career as a legislator has begun to appear as though he is just “phoning it in”. With Albany in disarray, corruption and arrogance draining our confidence and a debt that threatens to bury us, we cannot afford to have our representative “phoning it in”.
I am asking you to take a leap of faith and to support my campaign to unseat Dov Hikind. I am a political novice; I am not a lawyer nor am I an accountant. These things would be drawbacks were it not for the shape in which politicians, lawyers and accountants have left us. I am however one of your neighbors who has a lifetime of public service behind him; a neighbor who knows very simply that spending more money is not an answer to bankruptcy. Please vote for me on November 2nd and give me the opportunity to represent all of the people of this district.
Sincerely,
Brian T. Doherty
